Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist who shot to stardom and shook up Democratic politics, has won the race for mayor of New York City. The Associated Press, NBC News and CNN called the race for Mamdani around 9:30 p.m., as his next-closest opponent, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, trailed. Mamdani, a state assemblyman from Queens, was at 1% in the polls when he launched an upstart campaign focused on the cost of living. He offered unabashedly left-leaning proposals including a rent freeze on rent-stabilized units, free buses and universal child care, paid for by levying taxes on the city’s wealthiest.
