Laser and nonlinear crystal manufacturers, as well as laser users, will descend on Prague later this year to actively participate in the Optica Laser Congress. It is being held together with the Advanced Solid State Lasers Conference (ASSL). The dates are 19-23 October 2025. Link: https://www.optica.org/events/congres... During the conference, attendees are encouraged to have a tour of the famous Czech Institute of Photonics and Electronics (ÚFE). This is public research institution that is part of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the largest Czech non-university research organisation. Grand Preview Tour By way of a preview, watch the grand lab tour they gave us, showing first the fibre calibration and splicing processes they have pioneered. We discuss the research priorities for fibre lasers working at 2 microns and the challenges for power scaling. We look at some of the solutions. And then in the second half, we see the manufacture of hollow core fibre. This is an amazing process to watch from the making of the preform to the three storey drawing tower. They draw 1km of fibre per hour at their facility.
