Police vans STORYLINE Portuguese police arrested four English football fans late on Saturday after scuffles broke out on the capital's main square. The confrontation came after the English, in Portugal for the Euro 20004 football tournament, spilled out on to street passing through Lisbon's Rossio Square. When police tried to clear the road scuffles broke out. Riot police quickly moved in the calm the situation and a series of arrests were made. Security officials remained at the scene to ensure the road stayed clear. Later there were clashes between English football fans and members of a Portuguese marching band. Local people said the trouble started when a bus carrying members of the band, who had been performing at a commemoration celebration for the city's patron saint, passed near the English. The Portuguese said a gas canister was thrown onto the bus by the English. The band got off the bus and started throwing bottles and anything else that came to hand at the English. At least one English fan appeared to be hurt but there was no definite information on injuries. Portuguese police attempted to keep the two sides apart. Around 30-thousand English fans are expected to be in Lisbon for the game against France on Sunday even though many don't have tickets. Authorities are placing 600 officers in and around the stadium, as well as 700 stewards. Twenty mounted police will also be on duty.
