Rudolf Steiner died one hundred years ago on March 30, 1925. He gave his last public address to members of the General Anthroposophical Society on September 28, 1924 on the eve of Michaelmas. His Last Address has received much attention during this anniversary moment in our century. But we should not forget the "First Address" -- otherwise we are coming into the play at the end and we don't know what happened at the beginning. Christoph Lindenberg, a biographer of Rudolf Steiner, identified the lecture "Goethe as the Founder of a New Science of Aesthetics" as the First Address. He did this based on remarks and written comments by Rudolf Steiner, who called this lecture on aesthetics a "healthy foundation for anthroposophy." Some folks might argue that the "First Address" was instead the lecture on Goethe's "Fairy Tale of the Green Snake and Beautiful Lily" that Rudolf Steiner spoke to an audience of theosophists in 1900. But in either example, there stands Goethe. For a videos related to this theme, see: "Spiritual Friendship" and "The Dark Forest" and any of the several Novalis videos previously posted.
