He was born in Shiraz, Iran, in about 1210 and died around 1291 or 1292. Saadi is known for his clear, eloquent, and pithy style. He produced a large body of work that includes several major contributions to Persian literature. His best-known works are the Bustan ("The Orchard") and the Gulistan ("The Rose Garden"). These two books are considered among the greatest classics of Persian literature. The Bustan is entirely in verse (epic metre) and consists of stories that aptly illustrate the standard virtues recommended to Muslims (justice, liberality, modesty, and contentment).
