Auckland Festival of Photography is pleased to present work by Mary Hutchinson. Mary is a Te Whanganui-a-Tara based art photographer, who up until recently has mainly shot black and white local street and social documentary work, but is now exploring colour, including nature, abstract and architectural themes. “With my photography I try to notice the less obvious details in urban life, especially less visible people, some of whom are regarded as being on the fringes of our communities. My influences include street art, the large scale public photographic art of JR, Ans Westra, Vivian Maier and Rebecca.” Exhibitions and publications: 2015: self-published black and white street photography photo-book Three Cities & selected images exhibited at Photospace Gallery, Wgtn 2016 : three B&W photo-books; Newtown Forever Festival Series, the longer Newtown Forever, and Cuba People. 2017: sequel photo-book Cuba People Two. Selections of both Cuba People images were exhibited at Photospace Gallery, and community venues also. Additionally a further central business district series Golden was exhibited at Wellington Cathedral of St Paul, and window on newtown at a pop-up Newtown venue. 2019: Public street art photographic paste-up mural ...a footpath near you..ara hīkoi pātata... in Newtown, Wgtn 2020: contributed to 'Responses to the Covid 19 Lockdown' online exhibition Photospace Gallery with series 'walking.. 2m...apart' 2021: Windscreen Washers 2012-2018 exhibited at Photospace Gallery, February with accompanying zines; Hey Kilbirnie colour slideshow exhibited on large screen at Te Whare Pukapuka o Te Awa-a-Taia, Ruth Gotlieb, Kilbirnie Public Library June; and in process; frameworks, opening July 12, TwoTodman community space, Brooklyn, Wgtn.
