Released in early 1994, the Barracuda 2LP would be Seagate's first 3.5" slimline 7,200 RPM drive and target users (or servers) that wanted a really fast drive. This drive family would come in 1,021 and 2,147 "MB" capacity variants and in 50-pin SCSI, Wide SCSI, and SCA versions. The privilege of owning this high-performance drive didn't come cheap. According to page 35 of the February 7, 1994 issue of InfoWorld, Seagate priced the flagship ST32550 model starting at $1,695 ($3,586 in 2024 dollars). DRIVE VITALS: Interface: SCSI-2 (50-pin) Form factor: 3.5" slimline Capacity: up to 2.00GiB Platters: 6, Heads: 12 (11 for data, 1 for servo) RPM: 7,200 Cache buffer: 512KiB Date: February-March 1997 (9th week) Status: works, but it has a few reallocated sectors This particular example was originally in @lburbo23's Compaq ProSignia 300 before being sent my way. The drive's lot number shows a date code of 9709, hence the "February-March 1997 (9th week)" date on the title card and making this example a later one. You may have noticed in Speedsys that the drive's capacity is 1.95GiB (2,000MiB), which is in contrast to the stated capacity in Seagate's manual of "2,147.4 Mbytes" or 2.00GiB. I don't know if it's due to the controller I used (a Tekram DC-395U) or if the ST32550N drives themselves are like this. This is why I listed the drive's capacity on the title card as "~2.00GB." This drive has 225 entries in the P (primary) list and 7 entries in the G (grown) list. The Barracuda 2LP isn't to be confused with the Barracuda LP (Low Power), a drive family released on April 22, 2009. Special thanks goes out to @lburbo23 for sending this drive my way.
