Committee of 100, APA Justice, and the US-China Education Trust co-hosted the first installment of the "Global Tensions, Local Dimensions: Navigating the U.S.-China Relationship" webinar series, focusing on the past, present, and future of people-to-people ties between the United States and China, as well as the implications for AAPI communities and U.S. policy. At a time of strained U.S.-China ties, and a concurrent rise in incidents of profiling and violence directed toward the AAPI community in the United States, this discussion explored how U.S. foreign policy intersects with domestic policy and rights. Speakers: Ambassador Julia Chang Bloch (Former U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Nepal) Governor Gary Locke (Former U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China) Jessica Chen Weiss (David M. Lampton Professor of China Studies, Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies) Jeremy Wu (Founder and Co-Organizer, APA Justice) Rosie Levine (Executive Director, US-China Education Trust (USCET)) Learn more about this event: https://www.committee100.org/events/b... 0:00 Welcome 0:05 Diplomacy Through People-To-People Exchange 3:12 Opening Remarks 5:15 Panel Discussion 5:18 Ambassadors’ Reflections: Careers and the U.S.–China Relationship 13:32 Comparing Past and Present U.S.-China Tensions 20:40 What’s Lost When U.S.-China Relations Are Strained 25:40 Balancing Criticism of China’s Government with Fair Treatment of Chinese Americans 35:34 Building Cooperation Between the U.S. Government and Chinese American Communities 41:18 Sustainable and Constructive People-To-People Exchanges 47:56 Chinese Diaspora Amid U.S.-China Tensions 55:00 Biggest Challenge Facing Chinese Americans and How To Address It 57:40 Closing Remarks
