The Atacama desert of Chile is one of the hardest places on our planet for animals to survive, because this is the world's driest true desert. There are parts of this region where it has never rained in recorded history, and all the animals that do cling on here are pushed to their limits just to survive - especially the invertebrates. Today, we're going to track down the most extreme desert inverts in South America and show you the insane ways they've figured out how to survive the brutal Atacama, all to find out if their mind-blowing stories could hold the secrets to solving one of the deadliest human x invertebrate conflicts in history. Note: our title references extreme "bugs," but we're using that term the way it's used in casual spoken English, not in the strict scientific sense. While most people use bug to mean virtually any arthropod or even general creepy crawly, scientifically, "bug" refers only to the insect order Hemiptera, the true bugs. We are NOT claiming that sea stars (or any echinoderm) are bugs! This is YouTube packaging, not primary literature. This Chile mission would never have been possible without the knowledge, drive, and talent of Spencer @MyWildBackyard and Emilio @AnimalEncountersEP. There is no crew we would rather travel the world with, and when it comes to filming extreme, rare, and dangerous invertebrates, there's no one better.
