Hello Viewers, this is episode 2 of our Royal Air Force Collywesten and Wittering bomb stores exploration. For episode 1 see here; EPISODE 1; • V Bomber: Where Britain Stored Atomic Free... RAF Laarbruch Hardened Weapon Stores; • What we found at the Cold War Weapon Store... Today we are exploring the protected magazines used to house the Fissile Cores and the Hardened Weapon Stores built for the Blue Danube. No. 1321 Flight was established at RAF Wittering in April 1954 as a Vickers Valiant unit to integrate the Blue Danube nuclear weapon into RAF service. Blue Danube was not engineered as a weapon equipped to withstand the rigours of service life; specially trained engineers were required as it was a scientific experiment on a gigantic scale, which needed to be re-engineered in service to fulfil the RAF requirements. Blue Danube was retired in 1962 and the bombs are now dismantled and stored at the Sellafield Nuclear decommissioning site. Originally opening as a grass airfield site in 1917. Being renamed RAF Collyweston following the formation of the Royal Air Force in April 1918. Throughout World War Two, a number of different units were stationed here including an eagle Squadron, formed from American volunteers. In 1941, the runways of RAF Wittering and Collyweston were joined together to make one 2-mile long, grass runway. The collyweston airfield was absorbed by wittering after the the Second world war ended, and with the advent of nuclear weapons, this expansive dispersed weapons storage area was constructed. Originally being open bomb dumps, workshops and maintenance areas were added to supply the V bomber force. Hardened Weapon Stores were added to house two Blue Danube thermonuclear bombs each on their trolleys. Fitted with an internal crane gantry to carry the 7.32 metre-long casings, which contained all of the circuitry, detonators, initiators and enriched plutonium required. The fissile cores were stored separately in the adjacent core storage buildings and were only loaded into the bomb casings immediately before they were needed. The fissile core provided the critical mass which would result in detonation of the main charge. In 1953 the perceived British stockpile requirement was 800 bombs each yielding between ten and twelve kilotons of explosive power. There are several hundred such munitions bunkers on British post-war airfields, most of which did not house nuclear devices. Declassified documents show that 58 blue danube bombs were produced, the first being sent here and became part of the active Vickers valiant nuclear fleet based at Wittering in April 1954. 20 blue danubes were in active front line availability at any one time until retirement from service in 1962.
