The Marathas were present in every province of India at the time and one can scarcely understand this period of history, with the collapse of the incumbent Mughals and the stealthy increase of British influence without a deep dive into the subject. The Marathas were also the first empire of an indigenous nature after long periods of Turkic Persian or Afghan rule, and the last indigenous empire before the British took over. The speaker makes the case that much of how India has shaped up today is due to these events 250 years ago.
