NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (M~G~M SE4332) In 1963 this Baltimore based female quartet began recording for Chancellor Records where two unsuccessful singles where issued. A move to Warner Bros. Records in the spring of 1964 resulted in just one single that didn't fare any better. In the late summer of 1964 under the direction of legendary producer Teddy Randazzo, the group signed with M~G~M Records. This amazing pairing of talent would change the Royalettes fortunes as well as secure their place in the history of 1960's girl group music. The majority of the group's recordings would be composed by Randazzo who also collaborated with Bobby Weinstein, Lou Stallman and Victoria Pike. The Royalettes ultimately issued ten singles with the label and two absolutely stunning albums. The first was packaged to present their hit, 'It's Gonna Take A Miracle' while the second was aptly entitled, 'The Elegant Sound Of The Royalettes' which contained a whopping 15 tracks. The heavily orchestrated work that Randazzo was doing at that point in time with the likes of Little Anthony & The Imperials, John Andrea, Ginny Arnell, Linda Carr, Anabell Fox, Al Hibbler, Derek Martin, Esther Phillips, Tony Orlando, Bobby Hart as well as his own solo recordings, all sit nicely along side of the material that he created with the Royalettes. Case in point is a track from the groups first LP, a Randazzo original entitled, 'How Can You Face Me'. Talk about atmospheric......the lush arrangement is a tension building epic with dramatic kettle drums, French horns, strings, passionate lead vocal by Sheila Ross, beautiful background vocals and all awash in spine tingling echo. This lavish union was all created for just one tune; a piece of 'album filler' if you will but absolutely worthy of its own single release. The Royalettes recorded work at M~G~M is truly something to be celebrated and is highly recommended.
