(25 Mar 2020) Rooms of a newly opened hospital in Rome dedicated to COVID-19 patients were filling up quickly on Wednesday. Nine out of the 13 available rooms were already busy with patients infected by the new coronavirus who needed intensive care, intubation and ventilators. The new COVID-19 hospital is based in a converted private clinic for cardiovascular diseases. Rome so far has opened at least five new hospitals dedicated to the new virus, while the main hub remains the Spallanzani National Institute for Infectious Diseases. The Lazio region, home to the Italian capital Rome, on Wednesday reported 1,728 confirmed cases and 80 deaths. The total tally in Italy since the start of the outbreak amounted to 69,176 confirmed cases and 6,820 deaths. For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death. The vast majority of people recover.
