The meninges are connective tissue membranes providing protection to the brain and spinal cord and channelling the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). 'hard mother') is a thick and fibrous membrane, forming the outermost layer of the meninges, the other layers being the arachnoid and pia mater. The two layers of the dura mater separate from each other in some places forming dural infoldings: Falx cerebri Tentorium cerebelli Falx cerebelli Diaphragma sellae The separation of the two layers also creates cranial venous channels, known as dural venous sinuses, that drain venous blood into the internal jugular vein and back to the heart.
