This is a review demo of a FireFly AX84 tube amp I built recently. I wanted to create a video with a little more detail that was bass centric since I couldn't find a video like this, so I thought it might help others in the future. Links- https://ax84.com https://ronsound.com https://www.musicalpowersupplies.com Timestamps 0:00 - Intro 0:07 - Why does a Bass Player want a low power tube amp? 1:18 - Devon Fretless Bass Rundown 1:50 - Signal Path for Recording 2:18 - Fretless Recorded Track 3:34 - Devon 5 String Fretted Active 5:25 - Blues for Alice Play Along 6:25 - FireZog Schematic Screenshot The video isn't perfect, I've got a few continuity errors because I tried to do it all in one take then trim it down... but I tried to give you a good idea of what you might expect. The unedited version is almost 12 minutes, no one wants to watch that... so I trimmed a lot of content to make it a little more palatable. The fretless is a little low end heavy, but I thought it might be a good way to show just how capable these little amps can be when set up well. For the audio, I have a 50/50 mix of the bass cab recorded with my ribbon mic and the other portion is the line out into my DAW (Reaper) with a simple cab sim. The video sounds almost exactly like what I hear when playing in a live context through the cab only. So I feel this was a fair representation of what one might experience with this amp. One of the most important factors that I left out of this video, matching the right cab to the amp is super important. I played this amp through 4 or 5 different cabs. My 112 cab sounded pretty terrible. My Mike Arnopol 28 cab sounds fantastic. The Mike Arnopol 16 cab I used in this demo sounds really really good. I think the bass is more forgiving of cab choice that a guitar... so keep that in mind if you build one of these. Background on this amp is available from www.ax84.com however the forum doesn't seem to be very active these days. It's still a great source of historical data. The build is from a PCB I got from www.ronsound.com who has fantastic documentation and a Mouser cart that he shared. This makes for a relatively stress free build. Three deviations I made from the standard build: 1. ECC99 power tube, based on all I’ve read (which is probably wrong, if so blame the internet and not me) will provide 3W instead of the 1ish W output of the standard build. I also included a bias switch that allows me to easily swap back to a 12AU7 if I wanted to. 2. An upgraded output transformer from Matt at Musical Power Supplies, the OT5PP. I tried the Hammond 125a output transformer but it made the bass sound really thin. 3. The FireZog mod to allow for a line level output. This allow me to use a cab and a direct line out from the amp, or just a direct line out with a built in dummy load so the amp doesn’t get damaged. I included a screen shot of the schematic at the end of this video.
