George D. Peter - A Musical Missionary Our Choir-master Late. Prof. George D. Peter led the church choir at TELC Bethlehem Church, Poraiyar through his prayers, humility and sacrifice along with his wife Mrs. Prema George. His musical ministry had been a source of comfort, inspiration to many and we continue to walk in his footsteps. Our Lord says in John: 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” Yes, Sir along with his family was on knees with the word of God nurtured our choir. Under the leadership of our beloved George sir, as Bethlehem Beacons we were privileged to partake in many of the historic events of TELC like 5 Bishop consecrations, New Jerusalem Church 275th year choir, 300th-year TELC centenary choir, 3 Women’s fellowship state conference choirs, 8 pastors’ ordinations services to name a few. Besides, we had the privilege of leading the singing session in a 5-day convention conducted by Jesus calls in Nagapattinam. We also performed in 3 TV programmes, 6 Radio programmes and the list continues to grow. On this occasion, we would like to record our gratitude to our sir for training us to runner up in Tamil Nadu state level carols competition conducted in Chennai by Thina Thoothu in 1997. I would say these events have made unforgettable memories in our lives and others too. The richest musical experiences that he brought with him through his father from Palayamkottai, from Trichy especially through Late. Mr. Cooling Rajaiah have inspired many of us to become composers, organists, choir-masters in different places like Mettucherry, Kumarachi, Pattukottai, Coimbatore, Chennai and abroad. Now, we can proudly say that Poraiyar is known for his musical heritage as Tranquebar is known for its protestant missionaries. The word of advice that he left after every great performance about humility still helps us. I always remember his encouraging words whenever we fail, “the world is a big room for improvement”. The evensong worship in English at Bethlehem Church, Poraiyar was his initiative that helps many of us very much when we travel abroad. I record my gratitude to our beloved sir for sowing the seeds of sacred music in me. Only, he paved the way for me to teach music and conduct our ‘Bethlehem Beacons’ on various occasions. The disciplined training that we had under his leadership helped me personally in many ways particularly to accept the responsibility in conducting the choir in the Anglican church (Christ the King) with choristers from different nationalities when I was in Libya during the civil war. I can proudly say that I am a BEACON. As we read in Mathew – 5:16 “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Yes, I praise God for his fruitful life and for sending our musical missionary George Sir to Poraiyar. May our Lord and Saviour strengthen and console Aunty and every one of us till we meet him again on the other shore.
