Tribute To The Proud Coal Miners Of Ollerton Colliery.

On the afternoon of Tuesday 20th September 1994, the skyline of the district was changed forever when the winding headstocks of Ollerton Colliery were demolished. The headstocks, together with the rest of the mine buildings, had dominated the landscape since 1926 when coal was first produced. The Butterley Company of Ripley in Derbyshire had sunk test boreholes around the area between 1918 and 1919. From the results of these it was decided to sink a mine to the east of Ollerton Village on a green field site (the site now occupied by Sherwood Energy Village and Tesco). Sinking of the two shafts down to the Top Hard coal seam (called the Barnsley Bed in Yorkshire) began in February 1923 and was completed in October 1925. The depth of the shafts to the coal measures was - No1 Downcast: 550 yards (504 metres) and No2 Upcast: 559 yards (512 metres). Coal production started during August 1926 from a 'tub stall' and rope haulage system. During the 1930s, belt conveyors, mechanised coal cutters and 'long wall' coalfaces were introduced, which greatly increased productivity. Ollerton was nationalised on 1 January 1947, forming part of the East Midlands Division of the National Coal Board (NCB). The NCB set production targets for each colliery - in Ollerton's case, 17500 tons of saleable coal per week (approximately 857500 tons per year). When the target was met, the NCB flag was raised on No1 headstock. During the early 1950s the following were installed to handle the ever-increasing production: a diesel-hauled high capacity mine car system; a state-of-the-art underground rail track and signalling unit; high capacity mine car loading points; fully mechanised coal handling machinery. On the surface, high capacity conveyors, mine car unloading machinery and an updated screening plant were also incorporated into the new scheme, which came into use at Easter in 1953. These new units had many benefits over the old i.e. they could handle greater tonnage, required less maintenance and importantly, reduced the manpower needed. From 1926, coal had been handled by the original 1920s screening and washing plants, which, over the years, had become a maintenance nightmare and a bottleneck in relation to output. both plants were modernised to meet the ever-increasing demands in production. Up to the early 1950s, all coal had been mined on 'hand got' faces, although coal cutters had been used to undercut the seam. Mechanical coal cutters/loaders were introduced in the early 50s - the first one being an Anderson Boyes/Meco Moore machine. Through the following years, a succession of other cutter/loader machines were used, such as shearers and trepanners. These, together with self-advancing roof support systems and other modern mining machinery, helped the mine cope with increasing production demands. By the afternoon of 7 December 1968, a major milestone for the colliery had been reached - a million tons had been raised in one year. The Top Hard seam finally produced its last coal in December 1978. During its life of 52 years it had produced over 37 million tons of coal from 100 faces - a fine achievement. Access to the Parkgate seam, 180 yards (164 metres) below the Top Hard, was started in 1974, coming on stream in February 1977, and was in production when the last skip of coal was wound in 1993, so ending over 60 years of continuous production. Sadly recorded 67 fatalities including a 14 year old boy and a man of 71.
