I spent several weekends restoring various media of old 8 - and 16 bit computers from the 80s and early 90s. I was surprised that I could still do this in 2020. A lot of the media was defective, in particular half my floppy disks were unrecoverable, several tapes wouldn't read and most harddisk had faulty blocks. My luck is that I still have the original machines; so most of the restoration happend on original hardware. For Amiga, the most important tool was an IDE-CF adapter that would let me connect a compact flash card with enough storage where I could save the floppy disk raw image files. The NeXT cube was tricky. I had to order a special cable that would connect between the soundbox and an older LCD (VGA only) because NeXT hardware was fairly proprietary. I also had to get a DAT drive to restore the tapes I had and finally, because the disks are all basically dying, I was able to capture the disk images and store them on SCSI2SD adapter which lets me boot my NeXT from an SD card. For the Mac, I had to use ddrescue on a Linux box which required me to get a PCIe SCSI host adapter. These are really hard to find but I was able to get in on Ebay. Luckily, even Ubuntu still has full kernel support for something that's already 14 years old. All in all, a very interesting project. Here's the blog post: https://blog.digitalwire.com/2021/10/...
