After barely escaping the prison—if you can even call that hellhole a prison anymore—we stumbled into the nearest house we could find, half-dead and soaked in blood, most of it not our own. The place was quiet. Too quiet. One of those creepy suburban homes with family photos still hanging on the walls, untouched dinner plates on the table, and a rotting smell coming from somewhere deeper inside. We didn’t check. Barricaded the windows, shoved furniture against the doors. Not that it’d stop a determined horde, but we were running on fumes and adrenaline. A few hours of broken, dreamless sleep, always with one eye on the door and a hand on the trigger. We thought we were safe—just for a night. Thought we could patch our wounds, catch our breath, maybe even piece together a plan. But the dead don’t care about plans. Around 6 AM, the sound of breaking glass downstairs tore us out of half-sleep. We weren’t sure if it was the wind, a stray zed, or worse.
