#12. Bailey No4 restoration + DIY japanning

In this episode I'm restoring an old Bailey/Stanly No 4 hand plane. The tote, made of bakelite, was completely broken. The front knob, of bakelite too, was very damaged. I decided to make them with oak wood. As for the japanning, always wanted to try the old method. I followed the method used by Hand Tool Rescue (video :    • Best Japanning Recipe  ). The final mixture was still very runny so I decided to add more gilsonite. My final ratio is : Gilsonite 45%, Turpentine 45%, Boiled Linseed Oil 10%. You should let it sit for at least 1 day after adding to the mixture. I was really satisfied with the final result.
