Car driving away STORYLINE: Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz said on Tuesday his country would no longer consider Turkey as a friend if it allows the United States to use its bases for strikes against his country. Aziz was speaking to reporters after meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit at the start of talks in Ankara to seek Turkish support against possible military action against Iraq. Asked if Turkey could still be considered a friend of Iraq if it offered this support to the possible US attack, Aziz replied "absolutely not." Aziz's visit came a day after a top US diplomat held talks to allay Turkish concerns over military strikes on Iraq. Turkish support is essential for the United States, which could use a southern Turkish base for air raids in Iraq. Aziz said it was against Turkey's interests to help the United States. Turkey's southern Incirlik air base served as a staging point for strikes on Iraq during the 1991 Gulf War. This time round, Turkey is extremely reluctant to support military action against Iraq. Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said Washington appeared to be intent on military action on Iraq, even if Baghdad complies with UN conditions. The visit comes as UN weapons inspectors in Vienna, Austria, are pressing an Iraqi delegation for free access to all sites where Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein may be concealing weapons of mass destruction. Aziz said the Iraqi delegation in Vienna was under instructions to "cooperate fully" with the inspectors to prove that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction.
