(30 Nov 2017) Sarajevans who spent almost four years besieged by Serb troops led by Ratko Mladic reacted with satisfaction on November 22nd 2017 after the general was sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the Bosnian War. Many residents gathered at the central square to pay their respects near a monument dedicated to the children of Sarajevo killed during the siege of the city by Bosnian Serb forces. Mirsada and Muhidin Karacic who narrowly escaped the market place attack of 1995, when Bosnian Serb forces shelled a busy market killing 68 people, told the Associated Press that they were satisfied with the verdict. However they said that that many families would not not be happy, especially since Mladic was found not guilty of one count of genocide for his alleged role in killings in municipalities outside Srebrenica. *** A court guard on November 29th told reporters in the lobby of the United Nations war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia that defendant Slobodan Praljak was alive and "receiving medical attention" after he claimed to have taken poison in the court room. The guard declined to give further details and did not give his name. Praljak drank from a bottle and said it was poison shortly after the appeals judges had confirmed his 20-year sentence for involvement in crimes as Croat forces attempted to carve out a Croat ministate in Bosnia by driving Muslims from towns and villages during the 1992-95 war. An ambulance was seen leaving the court grounds but it was unclear if Praljak was inside. Small village where Slobodan Praljak lived in mourning *** People in Grabovina, a small village in southern Bosnia Herzegovina, mourned the death of its most important resident, Slobodan Praljak, a Bosnian Croat general who committed suicide at the war crimes tribunal in The Hague on November 29th. At Praljak's family house the gates were closed, but villagers arrived to bring candles and pay respects. Praljak was a hero for his countrymen here. Pero Pervisic, one of the closest friends and comrades of Praljak, fought the Bosnian war under direct command of general Praljak. Pervisic also served as a driver for the general, and had close contact with Praljak over the years. "He was a great man, great warrior, great patriot, I knew him like that. Croatian people will not have someone like that in near future", Pervisic told AP. Pervisic praised Praljak as someone who would never harm anyone, so the whole hometown was shocked to hear a verdict of guilty was handed down at The Hague. A bigger shock arrived seconds later, when Praljak drank from a little vessel and said: "I drank poison". In a small town of Capljina, nearby Praljak's village, a large mural was painted, showing picture of general, with the last quote he said just before he committed suicide: "Slobodan Praljak is not a war criminal, I reject your verdict with contempt."
