Within Iceland is a volcanic crater which is a popular tourist attraction. Known as Kerid Crater, it measures 558 feet or 170 meters wide and 180 feet or 55 meters deep and is filled with at its bottom with a crater lake. Yet, it is highly unusual as it is not a maar explosion crater like originally suspected for many decades. It is also not a caldera. Instead, it has a different origin which makes Kerid Crater a fascinating geologic oddity.
