President Abdirashid Ali Shermarke Of Somalia Greeted by Jomo Kenyatta | State Visit | July 1968

Wednesday, July 24th 1968. Footage of the arrival in Nairobi, Kenya of Abdirashid Ali Shermarke, President of Somalia at the start of a six-day State Visit. He was met at the airport by the President of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta. President Shermarke said that the purpose of his visit was to consolidate the blossoming friendship between both nations which had been marked by four years of bitter hostility during which over 2000 people had been killed. The "Shifta War" (1963 to 1967) was a conflict in which ethnic Somalis of the Northern Frontier District (NFD) of Kenya attempted to secede from Kenya to join Somalia. The word "Shifa" was coined by theKenyan side. It is the Somali word for bandit.
