As Allied troops advanced on Europe in the final months of World War II, they encountered one of the most terrifying scenes in history: the Nazi concentration camps. As they liberated these sites, American, British, and Soviet soldiers were horrified by the scale of the horror. Piled corpses, skeletal prisoners, and gas chambers still bearing traces of their last use bore silent witness to the barbarity of the Nazi regime. In camps such as Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Bergen-Belsen, the Allies found thousands of survivors on the brink of death. Many were too weak to move, victims of malnutrition, disease, and years of torture. Military doctors did their best to save those who could still be rescued, but hundreds died even after liberation due to the extreme deterioration of their health. The revelation of these horrors shocked the world. The Allies meticulously documented what they found, photographing and filming the evidence so that the Nazi atrocities could never be denied. These images were later used at the Nuremberg Trials as evidence of the crimes against humanity committed by the Third Reich. The liberation of the camps marked the end of a chapter of horror, but also the beginning of the difficult task of bringing justice. Many of those responsible were arrested and tried, while the survivors, despite having been rescued, faced the challenge of rebuilding their lives after having lived through hell on Earth.
