Cheering crowd throwing newspapers and other objects into the flames STORYLINE: Hundreds of thousands of people rallied in the bustling Pakistani city of Rawalpindi on Sunday to protest a possible US war on Iraq, in a second of two anti-war demonstrations that organisers had optimistically dubbed "Million Man Marches." Carrying banners and white flags saying "God is Great" in Arabic, supporters of the anti-US alliance chanted slogans "Down with America" and "No war for oil." Loudspeakers called for jihad, or Muslim holy war. "Wake up Pakistanis. It's time for jihad. Your Islamic faith is calling on you," one crowd leader said. Organisers claimed about a (m) million people participated in the march in Rawalpindi, adjacent to Islamabad, amid tight security. Police gave a far lower figure for the turnout, but journalists at the scene said it was one of the largest rallies in recent years and could easily have been half a million people. A policeman in Rawalpindi's police emergency department, Nasir Kazmi, said there were about 30-thousand people in the rally, which was organised by the Mutahida Majlis-e-Amal, or United Action Forum, a grouping of hardline Islamic parties. Pakistan's President Musharraf is a key ally of the US in its war against terrorism in neighbouring Afghanistan, and opposition parties frequently criticise his policies. Security was tight, though organisers had pledged the rally would be peaceful. Last Sunday, nearly 100-thousand people rallied in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi.
