Northern River Masters Match Fishing River Ouse July 2020

This weeks episode of HOOKED sees me tackle the open match fishing circuit, competing in round one of the Northern River Masters event on the River Ouse below York. With the river carrying some fresh water from the week leading up to the event, it had fined down and on the morning of the match and levels appeared to be holding steady at a little over a foot above the summer norm. The YDAA open match the week before had seen some good weights returned from the Palace Ings, particularly on the bend opposite the Palace, a noted bream holding area and also the end peg which is always a flyer, if you survive the walk! With that in mind, I favoured drawing peg 16/17 in the Northern River Masters but would have settled for a peg at Fulford in the " Pumper ", another notable area that has always been good to me. The other side of the river was pegged in the " Donkey Woods " and twenty pegs would be on each side with 4 sections in total whereby the winner of each would qualify for the final on the River Tees in October. First sight of the river that morning and I knew that the colour it was carrying, known as " Ling " locally, was run off from peat lands and any experienced Yorkshire Ouse angler will tell you that the river always fishes harder when this colour is in the water. I don't know what the fish don't like about it, maybe it's a little acidic but it definitely puts them off their grub! How would I draw, how would I fare? Watch on to find out...
