In August 2025, the Tamil Nadu State government announced a statewide survey to map and enumerate interstate migrant workers from the state. The initiative was aimed at creating a reliable database of workers engaged in varied sectors within and outside the state, across sectors like construction, textiles, hospitality, and manufacturing. However, the state labor department put the project on hold in December 2025. According to a Times of India report dated December 4, 2025, sources within the department suggest that the decision to stop the exercise was influenced by concerns regarding political fallout and the attention surrounding large numbers of migrant labourers. In this episode, Aishwarya Mohanty, special correspondent with The Migration Story, speaks to Dr. Bernard D. Sami, Senior Fellow at the Loyola Institute of Social Science Training and Research (LISSTAR) to understand the implications of such a decision. We discuss why the survey was initially announced, what it aimed to achieve, the potential impact had it been completed, and the broader implications of abruptly stalling such initiatives. #migrantworkers #migrants #counting #migrantdata #tamilnadu
