We are at the shore of Lake Tana, Ethiopia’s largest freshwater lake and the source of the Blue Nile River. The Lake is situated in the northern part of the Amhara State of Ethiopia and has been nominated for a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve recognizing its national and international natural and cultural importance. The Lake’s ecosystem is being threatened as a result of rapid population growth and increasing economic transformation in the basin. This in turn has led to greater stress for agricultural production and grazing, resulting in deforestation, erosion and wetland destruction. Furthermore, the increased production of untreated urban and industrial wastewater effluents is a growing concern. As a result the Lake’s ecosystem is being threatened by the uncontrolled expansive growth of the water hyacinths. The Learning journey is part of a joint initiative to establish a center of excellence in Water, Agriculture and Public Health in Ethiopia. Music: Matisyahu - Got no Water
