After the controversial release of his first mainstream horror feature ‘Shivers’ in 1975, Canadien filmmaker David Cronenberg’s second feature, was to be a companion piece in themes and subject to his first, featuring his unique brand of cathartic body horror. ‘Rabid’ released in 1977, was an ambitious project for the young filmmaker and on a low budget he showed his talent for working in the genre. ‘Rabid’ would feature car crashes, bike crashes, soldiers on the streets of Montreal and infected citizens on the rampage on the hunt for flesh and blood and Cronenberg handled this ambitious project with a talent that showed the world he was here to stick around. ‘Rabid’ is an important film in the early career of David Cronenberg as it begins to show us an intelligence and passion for filmmaking that we don’t get to see much from other artists and directors working in the genre. In this episode we look at the technological themes of ‘Rabid’ and Cronenberg’s evolution as a director and artists working with cinematic textures and cinematography that became trademarks in the directors work throughout his early works and continuing on in such films as eXistenZ (1999) and Crimes of the Future (2022). So please sit back, relax and enjoy this video essay looking at the cathartic body horror, prophetic examinations of technology and cinematic texture in David Cronenberg’s modern take on the vampire in ‘Rabid’ (1977). #movieanalysis #videoessay #davidcronenberg
