Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation ("Restoration"), the nation's first community development corporation, works on many fronts to expand financial inclusion and economic empowerment in Brooklyn. Through a wide range of programs, Restoration helps people become economically self-sufficient and build assets; preserves the affordability and quality of local rental housing; promotes homeownership opportunities; and increases residential safety and energy efficiency. Citi has been a partner to Restoration for decades and has provided project financing, philanthropic support and financial services. In 2009, Citi announced that Citi Community Capital would provide $15 million in financing for the renovation of Restoration Plaza, the organization's signature space for community cultural, retail and other services. Citi has donated a total of $600,000 to support the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs' Financial Empowerment Center in Brooklyn. The Center, which is operated in partnership with Restoration, provides one-on-one financial counseling to low-income New York City residents, in English and Spanish, and offers an online, searchable database that brings together, for the first time, all of the financial services available to New Yorkers.
