In the summer of 1986, Joanna Stingray gave the band a Portastudio she smuggled into Leningrad. Working with the new gear, the guys eventually found their sound and even recorded the album themselves. Vishnya, an audio engineer, listened to it and soon persuaded Tsoi to mix it at his home studio like in the old days. "I immediately realized that nothing better would ever be created in this studio," he later remembered. After it was done, Joanna Stingray offered to help the band release the album in the US. Thinking that they would probably no longer deal with him after her offering, the audio engineer made a few copies of the tape, flew to Moscow, and sold them to pirates for distribution. When the guys found out about this, they had already become the country's top band, and many songs from the album became huge hits. In 1989, the album was also released in the US by Capitol Records and lauded by the American critic, Robert Christgau.
