What is Epi-LASIK Surgery? - Dr. Sriram Ramalingam

Epi-LASIK Surgery is also a type of refractive correction on the cornea. Here instead of the microkeratome or the small instrument, one use small amount of absolute alcohol that is placed on the epithelial and the epithelium is removed and a laser is done on top of the stomal bed and a bandage contact lens is applied on top of the cornea after the laser surgery. So the epithelium is removed in toto unlike in LASIK the epithelium is rolled back or in the LASIK surgery the flap is held back, here the epithelium is peeled back again using absolute alcohol. Occasionally instead of absolute alcohol, there are soft plastic instruments or but instrument which can be used to remove the epithelial surface. The disadvantage f using absolute alcohol is that it can cause damage to the surrounding structures. In Epi-LASIK Surgery the epithelium is removed and a bandage contact lenses is applied, it may take atleast a week for the epithelium to regenerate. So it may take atleast a week for the vision to recover after an Epi-LASIK procedure as against LASIK or a LASEK procedure. So the recovery time is longer in Epi-LASIK. But these are applied for persons who have a thinner cornea and are not suitable for LASIK procedure.
