Indigenous Stone Structures of Upstate New York

Glenn Kreisberg, author and researcher of archaeoastronomy and landscape archaeology in the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains of New York, discusses the large number of standing lithic structures scattered throughout the valleys and forests of Northeastern America. He notes these are often dismissed as stone walls and field clearing piles from early European and colonial era settlers. He believes, and presents his evidence, that they are actually part of a Native American tradition of ritual building practices that reflect a sophisticated world view representing and defining a social and cultural belief system.
