(14 Jan 2014) Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the Syrian people are the only ones who can resolve the issues in their country, as he met with his Jordanian counterpart in Amman. "We hope that, that resolution will prevent further rise in extremism in this region and will enable all of us to move towards a peaceful region," Zarif told media at a news conference. Zarif has expressed hope that the upcoming Geneva II peace talks on Syria would result in dialogue, over the war-torn nation. Both the US and Russia, who brokered the Geneva talks, remain at odds on whether Iran, Syria's strongest ally, should attend next week's talks. Zarif reiterated Iran's willingness to attend the conference, if invited. The US estimates that 130-thousand people have been killed in the Syrian civil war that began in early 2011, and as many as eight (m) million others have been forced from their homes. Zarif also said on Tuesday Palestine is a "central issue," for peace and security in the "Islamic world." "It can only be resolved through the full restoration of the right of the Palestinian people," he said. Zarif said it was important for "all of us" to work together to avoid sectarian conflict in Islamic countries. He said the continued conflict would have "Tremendous disastrous consequences for the entire region and for world at large." Nasser Judeh, the Jordanian Foreign Minister, added that during the bilateral talks, "I expressed Jordan's firm belief in diplomatic solutions to crises and to factors of instability of which this region is not short of."
