(6 Feb 1996) Spanish/Nat Mexican animal rights activists have protested against bullfighting as Mexico City's bullring celebrates its 50th anniversary. The demonstrators tried to shut down the historic bullring and called for an immediate ban on bullfighting in the country. Animal rights activists took to the streets of Mexico City determined to spoil celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the capital's historic bullring. Carrying signs calling bullfighting a slaughter and bullfighters murderers, the demonstrators tried to shut down the ring and called for an immediate ban on bullfighting in Mexico. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "We demand President Zedillo to ban Bullfights in Mexico and that this square be demolished and turned into a park." SUPER CAPTION: Protestor Banning the sport, however, will not be a simple task. Bullfighting was brought to Mexico by the Spaniards more than 400 years ago and has been an intrinsic part of Mexican culture through the centuries. The bullfighting industry, including the fights, the cattle raising, costume making and so forth employs thousands of families in Mexico. But bullfighting has been outlawed in Mexico before. Presidents Benito Juarez and Venustiano Carranza had previously banned bullfights. The animal rights activists believe their present President, Ernesto Zedillo should follow their example and do the same. The animal rights movement is becoming increasingly more powerful as younger generations care less and less about the sport. Despite this, bullfighting continues to attract large crowds to the largest bullring in the world.
