The last coal mine on this stretch of coast line closed 30 years ago. From double digits to zero, as imported coal out priced local deep mined coal. When local mines were in production coal was screened and washed locally and the 'tailings' were discharged into the sea. Tailings were the unwanted remnants after the useful coal was extracted from the raw mined material. They were a watery slurry of fine mineral particles, stone and coal. Coastal mines invariably discharged this slurry into the sea. These 'tailings' had lots of small coal in the mix and that coal washed up on local sea shores as Sea Coal where locals collected it by the sack full to burn on in their homes on open fires. So it's "No coincidence" then, that when all the local coal mines disappeared, the Sea Coal all but disappeared with them.
