Water in the lower unit is never a good sign… and that’s exactly what I found. In this video, I kick off a new boat restoration project after buying a new-to-me 2005 Carolina Skiff 19 powered by a 2005 Johnson 60hp outboard. During my initial inspection, I notice an oil leak at the lower unit water intake, which quickly turns into a full lower unit teardown. After removing the Johnson 60hp lower unit and draining the gear oil, we discover water mixed in the oil along with corrosion inside the gear case—clear signs of water intrusion that could lead to serious outboard damage if left unchecked.
