Some patients come to TWC with eye injuries that need special treatment. Dr. Joe Wolfer is a Veterinary Ophthalmologist from the Islington Animal Eye Clinic, who volunteers to assist TWC with special ocular cases like this coyote’s. She had been found in Oakville suffering from mange and wounds on her neck, head and eyes. Her left eyelid had been split and there was scarring on her cornea. TWC’s rehabilitation manager Aaron Archer was concerned about the coyote’s ability to see; if her depth perception was affected she wouldn’t be able to hunt. It was time to call Dr. Wolfer. Dr. Wolfer believed the scarring on the left eye was due to trichiasis, where the eyelashes are misdirected and grow inward towards the eye – in this case it was caused by the wound inflicted on her eyelid. He was able to perform a successful surgery to prevent more damage to the eye (watch the video!). Over the next five days of rest she’ll receive antibiotic eye ointment and an anti-anxiety sedative to keep her calm as she heals. She’ll be fed nutrient-filled dog food, berries and apples, along with mice and quail that TWC stocks frozen. This coyote will remain in care until she’s fully recovered, then moved to a large outdoor enclosure to allow her warm winter coat to grow in before she’s released.
