#ww2 #military #documentary The discovery of an old fireman's training manual used as a notebook by a German soldier , Toni Kumpel, provides the inspiration to the story behind the Occupation of the Channel Islands and those who survived it. In Toni's Footsteps: The Channel Islands Occupation Remembered looks at the events of the occupation of the only British territory ever captured by the German army, covering a period of June 1940 to the end of the war. It looks at the impacts on daily life of the British citizens forced to live under enemy rule, and also the lives of the soldiers serving there and the forced labourers who were brought to the Islands to build their defenses. With an ever increasing amount of defensive building work completed as they prepared for an invasion that never came, the lives of over 30,000 German soldiers in these beautiful islands were a stark contrast to the horrors of the war happening elsewhere. This created a unique story in the broad tapestry of the history of World War 2. In Toni's Footsteps uses archive footage and media, creative sound design, interviews with survivors on both sides and original footage filmed in the islands in 2001. It is an original and powerful historical documentary covering fear, anger, love, humour, mistrust, bravery, starvation and murder.
