Snellius Minerals LLC Corundum Sphere

This video demonstrates the experiments that you can do with a polariscope and the corundum sphere from Snellius Minerals LLC. We review some of the properties of corundum as well as how the optical properties and crystallography of corundum relate. We discuss Snell's Law and the complications that arise from viewing a spherical sample of a mineral. We then examine the optical properties of a 10 mm and a 20 mm corundum sphere focusing on optic axis interference figures, pleochroism, and the extinction and transmission of light with crossed polarizers. We compare and contrast the corundum sphere to the corundum sample from Snellius Minerals LLC. The corundum sphere allows more freedom with viewing direction at the cost of a more complicated geometry for interaction with light.
