The Dutch Harness Horse, known in the Netherlands as the Tuigpaard, is a proud and elegant breed developed in Holland during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was originally bred from powerful Dutch farm horses, such as the Gelderlander, and carefully crossed with Hackney horses to create a stylish, high-stepping carriage horse with both strength and beauty. The result was a horse that could perform impressively in harness shows, parades, and competitions, while still being manageable and refined. Standing between 15.2 and 16.2 hands high, the Dutch Harness Horse is known for its upright neck, expressive head, powerful shoulders, and animated trot. It usually comes in bay, chestnut, or black, often with white markings. The breed’s most distinctive feature is its spectacular, high-stepping action, which makes it a favorite in driving and show events. In modern times, the Dutch Harness Horse has gained international recognition not only for competitive driving but also for its performance in dressage and light riding disciplines, thanks to its energy, elegance, and willingness to work. Carefully managed by Dutch breeders, it represents one of Europe’s finest examples of a modern carriage and sport horse, admired for its power, presence, and precision in movement.
