Woodturning root balls and roots, rootballs. Woodturners like roots and root balls because they yield interesting shapes and wild grain. I’ve been spending a significant amount of time time salvaging my unprocessed wood stockpile in this hot weather. Despite being sealed and undercover the ambient temperature has caused considerable splitting and checking. I had to get a sawmill to process about a tonne of ash and beech before it ended up as firewood. Amongst my stockpile are some rootballs and roots that I wanted to preserve, but also needed some processing. This short video is about the processing of a hazel root ball. You will see despite my best efforts I fell foul of a hidden stone, blunting the chain. One observation I made is that I lost less of the timber that was sealed with paraffin wax than I did with PVA glue. lesson learned there.
