This Houston History launch event featured a panel discussion with individuals interviewed for the article, “Italians Plant Roots in Houston,” who trace their ancestry to Houston’s earliest Sicilian immigrants who established farms in the late 1800s where the Galleria stands today. Participants included: Pauline and Jimmy Tamborello, owners of a mom-and-pop grocery store in Fifth Ward; Nuncio Martino, who followed his father as a produce buyer for Weingarten’s; and UH alum Damon Palermo, president of Sacred Heart Society of Little York (SHS), which, until 2018, served the public authentic Italian meals for 65+ years on “Pasta Thursday.” This event was part of the “Pasta Thursday” held on May 23, 2019 at the historic All Saints Church in the Heights. Damon Palermo served as moderator and UH alum Sabine Meyer Hill, also participated. This panel improves our understanding of how food, culture, and history mingle in Houston to exemplify the city’s diversity and illustrate how communities adapt to the ever-changing cultural and economic landscape – central components to humanities studies.
