The Places We Protect: Te Manahuna for People and Nature Safeguarding the Future of New Zealand Mckenzie Basin The Mackenzie Basin is a place of global conservation significance. Known as Te Manahuna or “place of enlightenment” by Māori it is also a place of special cultural significance to the indigenous people of New Zealand. The region is renowned for its incredibly clear starry nights, remarkable turquoise blue lakes, valleys of emerald green and snow-capped mountains.Home to numerous endangered species found nowhere else in the world, the drylands of the Mackenzie Basin—a unique ecosystem dominated by shrubs and tussock grasses—is New Zealand’s least protected but most threatened habitat. More than 70% of drylands are now lost and only 3% legally protected. In recent years, the Mackenzie Basin has seen New Zealand’s fastest rate of biodiversity loss. It is paramount that this habitat is protected, for both nature and future generations. In this conversation we will learn how The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has a rare opportunity to help protect a strategically located property within this globally significant place that is at risk of development. If we don’t act now we risk losing this special place forever.
