Here are a few tips that may help you in your first geology job search. 0:46 Getting Experience Getting relevant experience for you resume is important but not all experience has to come from a previous job. Working with your professor, volunteering, or field school are all experiences you can use on your resume or in an interview to demonstrate your geologic knowledge and problem solving ability. Don't forget to consider joining organizations or participating in programs run by industry associations that exist to help you gain experience. 1:39 Writing Your Resume Make sure you read the job posting and company website before putting together your cover letter and resume. State the position you're applying for and why, demonstrate how your skills can be used to solve the specific problems mentioned in the job posting or company website. Your future employers don't expect you to work for free but putting in the time to create a custom resume for each job application could greatly increase your chances of success. 4:03 Networking Networking is a big part of being a geologist. Don't expect your network to just hand you a job but they are vital for discovering new opportunities or making introduction. After that the hard work of presenting yourself as the best candidate is up to you. Be part of an organization or attend major geology events like PDAC. Don't forget to have a business card! 6:15 Interviews Study the mission and values of the company you are applying to. Be prepared to relate your own experiences to the tasks and problems of the company. Many of your past work or educational experiences can be related to a new opportunity if you talk about why you approached tasks in a specific way not just what you did.
