In the 1920s, the Eiffel Tower had to be repainted every seven years due to rust, costing the French government a significant amount of money. Lustig, with his background in acting and manipulation, devised an elaborate scheme to swindle a scrap dealer named André Poisson. He convinced Poisson and other potential buyers that the French government needed to dismantle the Eiffel Tower and sell its metal. Using fake documents, meetings, and even a fake office, Lustig created a convincing illusion. Poisson eventually paid 1,200,000 francs (equivalent to 6.5 million dollars today) to purchase the Eiffel Tower and received a certificate claiming ownership. However, once he realized he had been scammed, Poisson was too embarrassed to report it to the authorities, and Lustig escaped to Austria with the money. Lustig's audacity didn't end there. He returned to France to try the same scam again, but this time, his potential victim grew suspicious and went to the police, leading to Lustig's escape to the United States. In the U.S., he turned to counterfeiting but was eventually arrested and imprisoned in 1935. He spent time in the notorious Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary and died of pneumonia in 1947. The story showcases Victor Lustig's incredible ability to manipulate and deceive people, particularly in an era where information and communication were not as advanced as they are today. It also highlights the audacity of his schemes and the consequences he faced in the end. #learnrussian, #russianlanguage, #polyglots, #polyglot, #rustili, #russianlessons, #russianteacher, #russianforbeginners __________ LEARN RUSSIAN FAST
