I've been flying commercial airplanes for 45 years. wowza! In this episode, I recounted my experiences in the aviation industry. This video, titled *"45 Years, Countless Flights: My Travel Confession,"* features my reflection on my nearly half-century of experience in the aviation industry—both as a passenger and a former airline employee. I explore how air travel has transformed from a manual, high-touch experience into the high-tech, fast-paced environment it is today. The video is a nostalgic yet insightful look at the evolution of flying. I contrast the "old days" of paper tickets, handwritten boarding passes, and walking across open tarmacs with massive airport hubs and "slimline" seating. Drawing on my career in ramp operations and revenue management, and website technology, I explain the "back-end" of aviation, including how non-revenue (standby) travel works and how safety regulations are developed through investigations by the NTSB and FAA. Ultimately, I emphasize that while technology has made travel faster, the core value remains the same: connecting people and cultures across the globe. --- [00:00] Introduction & First Flight: I recall my first flight at age 15 from Jamaica to Martinique and reflect on 45 years in the air. [01:02] The Way Things Were: A look back at the patience required for travel before apps, including calling airlines to check flight loads. [02:41] Airport Evolution: How airports transitioned from small, operational hubs with tarmac boarding to massive "shopping malls" with endless jetways. [07:59] The Shift to Digital: The history of ticketing, from "write-your-own" paper tickets to the dawning of online booking in the late '90s. [13:30] Non-Revenue Travel & "Z-Life": Behind-the-scenes stories of airline employee travel and the complex "endorsement" process between carriers. [19:03] Aircraft History: A discussion on legendary planes like the Boeing 727 and DC-8 compared to modern carbon-fiber jets like the 787. [22:34] Cabin Comfort & Space: The reality of modern "slimline" seats, shrinking lavatories, and the loss of legroom. [24:48] Smoking on Planes & Safety: Memories of "smoking sections" on aircraft and how past incidents led to today’s strict safety protocols. [27:18] How Aviation Rules Are Made: An explanation of the relationship between the NTSB and FAA in changing industry regulations after an accident. [32:04] Working in the Industry: Kerwin shares his experience starting "on the ramp" in the freezing cold and moving into corporate airline roles. [35:05] The Human Side of Travel: Final thoughts on how travel shrinks the world, the importance of human interaction, and why airlines never cancel flights "on purpose." ▶︎ If you like the content, support the channel at https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_.... ▶︎ Follow me on Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn!
