For more than a century, the Kurds have asked the same question: will we ever get our own state? With over 30 million people spread across Turkey, Iraq, Iran, and Syria, the Kurds are the largest stateless nation in the world. Historically, the odds have been stacked against them. After World War I, Western powers briefly promised a Kurdish state, but those plans collapsed. Since then, Kurdish uprisings have been repeatedly crushed, especially in Turkey and Iran. Regional governments fear that Kurdish independence would encourage separatism and destabilize their borders. Yet the situation isn’t static. In Iraq, the Kurdistan Regional Government functions like a de facto state, with its own parliament, military, and foreign relations. In Syria, Kurdish forces carved out autonomous zones during the civil war. These developments show that Kurdish self-rule is possible—even if full independence remains elusive. The biggest obstacle is geopolitics. No major regional power supports a sovereign Kurdish state, and global powers prioritize stability over redrawing borders. Kurdish divisions themselves also weaken the cause. So will the Kurds finally get a state? In the near future, probably not. But autonomy, influence, and international recognition are growing. The Kurdish question is far from settled and history shows it rarely disappears. SUBSCRIBE ► / @actualhistoryeducator #Kurdistan #KurdishIndependence #KurdishState
