I'm out. Losing a propeller blade is not worth the risk. My Whirlwind propeller on my bushplane (RANS S-21 Outbound) has sheared three bolts and trashed another. I'm NOT THE ONLY ONE. This is a huge problem for the company that just acquired Whirwind, Hartzell Propellers. Hartzell reached out to me after my last video and social media posts and are opening a safety investigation. More to follow on that. I'm glad they are taking this very seriously. But for me this is a good news story. I didn't die. I have friends who have died from losing a propeller blade. But what's the way forward? Will I continue to fly? Craig Catto of Catto Propellers was in Patagonia last month with me and talked me through what he thinks is happening and has a solution for me to confidently fly in the backcountry once again. I visited his facility in Northern California and he sent me home with two sets of propellers to test, a 78" for top end airspeed, and 84" for STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing). I am not sponsored nor affiliated. https://cattoprops.com/ The benefits I already see are: 1) Increased Performance 2) Ease and accuracy in setting the blade pitch 3) Increased engine cooling 4) 10x Blade retention safety factor 5) Customer support Ani and I were staying with Trent Palmer and Hailey Palmer when I found out that my Catto Propellers were already ready already so it was a short but beautiful Beechcraft Bonanza flight over Lake Tahoe down the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada to Jackson, CA to see my new friend (and savior!), Craig Catto. Craig and his daughter and Vice President Nicole show us my new propellers and explain the weave of the spinner, the aluminum(!) backplate, the 78" prop, and the new 84" prop with increased root pitch for engine cooling for Cub-style aircraft flying STOL. I ask him about the issues with the Nickel leading edge and how they've fixed it, then we talk about the sexy non-planer tip which splits the vortices for increased performance and reduced noise.
